The International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations is the only world federation of mountain guides.

The IFMGA imposes specifications that more than 20 member countries must respect in their training and examinations process.

To become a fully certified mountain guide, each candidate must spend between 5-10 years in training in the 4 disciplines of mountain guiding (climbing, climbing on ice climbing, mountaineering and ski mountaineering) .
